Oil consumption

M41, M51

Situation: 

It is possible that the oil separator on the above engines may not be sufficiently effective at
certain tolerance levels. Oil which has not been separated from the crankcase gas may be
fed via the air intake system to the combustion chamber where it is burnt. This results in
increased oil consumption. 

Affected
vehicles:

M41 from 09/94 up to 03/95
M51 from 01/94 up to 05/95

Action: 

Improved separation thanks to a pre-set throttle diameter. For this purpose a plastic insert
is fitted inside the cylinder head cover (please refer to figure).

Procedure:

In the event of vehicles suffering from "excessive oil consumption" check whether a plastic
insert has been fitted. For this purpose, remove the intake air silencer and check whether
there is a plastic insert in there by shining with a torch into the ventilation bore of the
crankcase.
If there is no plastic insert, replace the cylinder head cover and seal. It is not possible to
retrofit a plastic insert separately.

Important: 

Under normal circumstances cylinder head cover seals equipped with a rubber strip
can be re-used. However, the seals on the affected engines are fixed in place at
various points during production, so that they may suffer damage when removed.
Consequently, seals should always be replaced when carrying out this measure.

Normally, the oil consumption is calculated on the basis of the oil which has been
