Tightening Cylinder-Head Bolts on Recond. Engines

M10, M21, M30, M41, M51

Situation: 

As part of the optimisation of assembly procedures, the third tightening of the cylinder-head
bolts on the above-mentioned engines will no longer be performed at the factory as of
autumn '95; in future, it must be performed after the engine has been fitted in the vehicle,
as part of the warm-up (test run). 

Reconditioned engines subject to this new assembly procedure are identified by the Central
Parts Department by means of a red adhesive label and specification of the relevant
tightening values (see figure in Annex).

Engine types not listed above will continue to be tightened at the factory after a warm-up
run, due to the different behaviour of the cylinder-head bolts under stress.

Effect: 

Thanks to the altered timing of the "warm-tightening procedure" so that it is performed
immediately before the engine is actually put into service in the vehicle, the extent of the
seal achieved by the cylinder-head gasket (with the particular design of gasket being used)
has been improved. This is due to the fact that there is no drop in the tensile stress on the
cylinder-head bolts caused by the long period of storage to which reconditioned engines
are normally subjected. 

If this warm-tightening immediately after fitting the engine is not performed, there is a strong
possibility of the engine suffering damage as a result of inadequate sealing by the cylinder-
head gasket. 

Thanks to a number of improvements in the reconditioning process, it is no longer
necessary to carry out an oil change after running-in the engine for approx. 2,000 km
(1,200 miles), as long as an approved multi-grade oil has been used. However, the
running-in instructions must still be observed. 

This removal of the need for an oil change compensates for the extra costs incurred
through the "Tightening of cylinder-head bolts " procedure!

Procedure:

-

After fitting the engine in the vehicle and filling it with oil, water, long-life anti-corrosion
agent and anti-frost agent, connect up the cooling system.

Warm the engine up to normal operating temperature.

Tighten the cylinder-head bolts by applying the turn-of-bolt specified on the adhesive
label. 

Note:

Rubber-type valve cover gaskets only need to be replaced if they are suffering from
visible damage. 

Reimbursement: 

There is no need  to invoice customers separately or to provide warranty coverage for this
additional work, because this work belongs to the scope of the "Replacing reconditioned
engine " procedure.
