Converter lockup clutch - oscillating shift
E34, E36, E39 with A4S 270/310R (THM-R1)
Complaint:
At speeds between 80 and 110 km/h in 4th gear and with a constant light load, the
converter lockup clutch constantly opens and closes (oscillating shifts). If a fault is present,
the engine speed is prone to fluctuate by between 300 and 500 rpm.
Cause:
A drop in torque of the bolts connecting the converter bell housing/inter-mediate case/main
housing. Converter oil pressure drops due to internal transmission leaks in the area of the
transfer plate.
Affected
vehicles:
E34, E36 and E39 with automatic transmission A4S 270/310R (THM-R1 transmission)
Manufacturing period: Start of series production up to 04/97.
Procedure:
The transfer plate repair kit has been compiled for repairing the transmission. In case of
complaint, this should be installed in accordance with the Repair Instructions.
Please refer to Repair Instructions 24 27 510.
Note:
Special tool number 24 2 310 is required for this repair.

Reimbursement:
Material and labour costs incurred can be claimed through the usual warranty channels
subject to current warranty terms as follows:
