About the E39 5 Series
The E39 was the fourth-generation 5 Series, made from 1995 to 2004 as a saloon and, from 1996, a Touring. It used far more aluminium in its suspension and was the first 5 Series with a four-cylinder diesel. The E39 M5 of 1998 was the first M5 with a V8.
What these manuals cover
- Six-cylinder petrol: the 520i, 523i, 525i, 528i and 530i (M52, M52TU, M54).
- V8: the 535i and 540i (M62).
- Diesel: the 520d (M47), the 525d and 530d (M57) and the 525td and 525tds (M51).
- The M5 (S62 V8).
Tip: these are BMW factory manuals, listed by model, engine and body rather than by year. The code in brackets is the engine (M54, N52 and so on), and the last word is the body: SAL saloon, TOUR Touring (estate), COUPE, CONVER convertible, COMP Compact (hatchback), ROADST roadster, OFFRD for the X models. The X5 (E53) shares many E39 engines.
