Replacing coolant dual temperature switch
(M57)

Notes on disconnecting and connecting battery,

Refer to general information in MG12.

Disconnect and cover battery negative lead.

Drain off and top up coolant,

Refer to 17 00 005

.

The following illustrations show the E39. 

The procedure for the E38 is identical except for the first
illustration.

Important!

When working on the oil, coolant or fuel circuit, you must
protect the alternator against contamination.

Cover alternator with suitable materials.

Failure to comply with this procedure may result in an
alternator malfunction.

Recycling:

Catch and dispose of escaping coolant.

Observe country-specific waste-disposal regulations.

Release retaining clips (1).

Important!

The air duct can brake at the firewall if not carefully removed
and installed.

Carefully turn air duct (2) counterclockwise until it is no longer
secured to firewall.

Pull air duct forwards and remove towards top.
