Independent heating not functioning
E38/E39 with option 536
Situation:
In model series E38 as of 9/95 and E39 from the beginning of series production, the
independent heating (option 536) can also be activated by means of a radio remote control
unit. It can still be activated by means of the on-board computer, on-board monitor or MID.
The current version of the Owner's Handbook cites a range of approx. 400 m for the radio
remote control system.
Effect:
Such distances, however, presuppose optimum conditions such as undisturbed radio
transmission and visual contact with the heated rear window (= receiving aerial).
Affected
vehicles:
All E38s as of 9/95 and E39s from the beginning of series production fitted with
independent heating (option 536).
Procedure:
If you receive complaints from customers, please draw their attention to the following
instructions:

The way the hand-held transmitter is held is crucial to establishing good radio contact.
The extended aerial must not be pointed towards the vehicle like an infrared remote
control unit must be.

Hold the hand-held transmitter at chest height with the aerial pointing upwards or
horizontal, pointing to the left or right (see illustration).

The aerial of the hand-held transmitter must be fully extended and must not be short-
circuited to the casing of the unit (see illustration).
