Repair painting on CFK roof
E46, E63, E92
Situation:
The synthetic resin matrix means that the CFK roof (carbon fibre reinforced plastic) is not
stable against UV (ultraviolet) light. The necessary degree of UV stability is achieved by
applying a special UV-proof varnish. Here, a coat of at least 120 to a maximum of
250 micrometres is needed. (CFK roofs are prepainted with this paint system at the
factory).
Components on which the UV-proof varnish has worn off over a large area should not be
repaired by repair painting.
According to information received from the varnish manufacturer, spot repairs and wide-
area repair painting with this UV-proof varnish should not be performed for the following
reasons:

As soon as the UV-proof varnish has worn over a large area, the resin surface will be
discoloured due to the effects of exposure to UV radiation.

Sanding down the faulty areas will not achieve the desired result as this will not ensure
that the wearing will not continue to spread.

Discolouration of the base cannot be rectified without causing damage to the surface
of the fabric by sanding.
Discolouration cannot be repaired.
-
Transparent paint systems and composite materials in a visual look stand out from the
adjacent areas during and after spot treatment.

If the damage pattern is not defined or the cause in unclear, the varnish coat could
continue to wear at the repair point or in other areas after a repair has been
performed.
The only way to rectify damage patterns with these criteria in a way that is satisfactory for
the customer is to replace the CFK roof.
For following faults or damage, in which the surface of the varnish has not been completely
destroyed, can be repaired by means of reworking:

Visual defects caused by heavy use of automatic car wash. The CFK roof is
scratched. The paint is dull.

Scratches in the surface of the paint caused by branches, trees, dirt or similar.
-
Minor scratches or unevenness, superficial stone chips.
Affected vehicles:
E46/M3CSL, E63/M6 and E92/M3
Procedure:
Check the surface of the UV-proof varnish for signs of damage:
1.)
The surface of the varnish is already completely destroyed.
