Diverse Error Patterns in the Navigation System

E38 with option 609

Complaint: 

A.

Sporadic incorrect indication of the weekday when clock set to 12-hour mode (correct
indication in 24-hour mode)

B.

"Navigation" cannot be selected

-

Navigation label is highlighted grey

C.

Motorway is left too soon

-

"Next exit..." instruction

D.  Subsequent instructions come too soon

-

Instruction e.g. "2nd street right, then turn left, then turn right ".

E.

Instructions "chopped off" 

-

e.g. the voice says "urther on..." instead of "further on...",

F

Continued navigation instructions even though destination reached.

-

Destination always had to be deleted after leaving the destination area.

G.

Screen blackout for approx. 10 s

-

Software release is displayed briefly. 

-

Screen briefly goes red, green and blue in succession. 

H.

Main menu "dismembered" after terminal R ON

-

Immobilising the car using CODE may lead to the above error pattern. 

Cause: 

Operating software faulty

Affected
vehicles:

E38 with option Navigation (option 609)
Production period: from start of series production up to and including January 1996. 

Remedy: 

If you receive a complaint, load operating software release "CD Software 
V 5.0" by means of the navigation computer. This will update the operating system in the
video module and navigation computer. 

Important:

The new operating system also includes changes in the operating sequences of the
navigation system. These are summarized in the Enclosure entitled "Additional
Functions in the Navigation System". The customer must be supplied with a copy of
this Enclosure. 

Procedure:

To update the operating software in the navigation computer and in the video module,
proceed as follows:

1.

Turn the ignition key to terminal R (ignition key position 1) and wait until the navigation
system is ready for operation. Do not perform diagnosis while installing the new
software. Make sure that the power supply is stable, i.e. do not switch on any electrical
loads.
