Self-Adjusting Clutch SAC
M62
General information:
The continuous further development of BMW engines and the resulting increased performance also required
clutches with a high transfer torque. This has inevitably also resulted in an increase in the release force, and thus in
the pedal force. It was possible to keep this increase within reasonable limits with various actions (e.g. with an
improved release system), however the demand for a clutch with a reduced release force increased continually.
Therefore, BMW has developed a clutch in co-operation with Luk which meets these requirements.
The clutch from Luk, called the SAC (Self-Adjusting Clutch), will be used for the first time at the start of series
production of the E39 with the M62 engine.
Identifying characteristics of the SAC:
A
Wedge-shaped elevations (ramps) arranged at
equal intervals around the circumference. A
plastic ring is located under these ramps on
which the adjustment wedges are arranged in
the circumferential direction.
B
Pressure piece of adjustment wedges
C
Pressure spring
Advantages of the SAC:
As a result of design modifications to the lining and main diaphragm springs, it was possible to considerably reduce
the release force.
Compared to a conventional clutch, in which the release force increases with growing lining wear, the lining wear on
the SAC is compensated with specific readjustment, which provides a constant release force during the entire service
life of the clutch.
Due to the self-adjustment feature, the lining of the clutch disc can be utilised better. This represents a decisive step
toward a long clutch service life.
