Popping Type Noise in Passenger Compartment (Remove Rivet from Catalytic Converter Heat Shield)

Condition
Some customers may comment on a popping type noise heard in the passenger compartment. This occurs after driving at highway speeds and coming to
a stop.
Cause
The source of this noise may be the catalytic converter heat shield. When air flow stops, the heat from the converter may cause the shield to expand.
Correction
Remove (drill out) the rivet from the catalytic converter heat shield. Use the following procedure and part numbers listed below.
1.
Raise and support the vehicle.
2.
Remove the screws and the oxygen sensor wiring rear shield, if applicable.
3.
Remove the nuts from the catalytic converter to the exhaust downpipe.
4.
Separate the catalytic converter from the exhaust downpipe.
5.
Remove the gasket/seal and discard.
