Radiator Cooling Fan Motor: Description and Operation
DESCRIPTION
The cooling fan is controlled by the cooling fan relay. The cooling fan relay is electrically operated by the PCM. The PCM receives input signals from
the coolant temperature sensor, vehicle speed sensor and A/C mode selector.
OPERATION
The PCM will activate the cooling fan relay when engine temperature is above 227°F, air conditioning is turned on, or the coolant temperature sensor
fails. Any of these input signals causes the PCM to ground when vehicle speed is less than 35 mph. When circuits are grounded, the cooling fan relay
is energized and its contacts close, turning the cooling fan on.
