Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair

J 42067 Rear Main Seal Installer

-

Or Equivalent

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT 

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 
2. Remove the flywheel. See Transmission and Drivetrain.
3. Center punch the steel ring of the rear main oil seal.
4. Carefully drill a small, shallow, pilot hole into the steel ring of the rear main oil seal. Use caution when drilling the hole so as not to damage the

engine components on the opposite side of the rear main oil seal.

5. Screw in a self-tapping screw.
6. Use pliers to pull the rear main oil seal to remove the rear main oil seal.
7. Clean all sealing surfaces. 

INSTALL OR CONNECT 

1. Coat the lip of the rear main oil seal with a small amount of chassis grease, GM P/N 1052497 or equivalent.

2. Use the Rear Main Oil Sealer Installer to install the rear main oil seal.
3. Install the flywheel. See Transmission and Drivetrain.
4. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
5. Reprogram the applicable accessories.
