Cylinder Liner: Service and Repair
1. Remove cylinder heads, pistons and connecting rods must be removed before replacing cylinder liner. After removing cylinder heads, install tool
J-29775 to retain cylinder liners not being replaced.
2. If original liners are to be reinstalled, mark position of cylinder liner in cylinder block and keep piston with original liner for reference during
installation.
3. Pull cylinder liner from cylinder block. Discard O-ring from base of liner.
4. Check cylinder liner and cylinder block mating surfaces.
5. If original cylinder liner is to be installed and engine has not experienced overheating, install new O-ring onto bottom of liner. Align reference
marks made during removal and install liner into cylinder block.
6. If new liner is being installed or if original liner is being installed and engine has experienced overheating, then cylinder liner height must be
measured as follows:
a. Place liner in cylinder block without O-ring.
b. Place gauge J-29776, or equivalent, on cylinder liner. Check that spring-loaded guide pins fit into liner with machined pads resting on edge of
liner and dial indicator plunger contacting block deck face. Apply moderate pressure to gauge until dial indicator stops moving. Record this
reading. If reading is on the + side of dial indicator, cylinder liner is higher than block face. If reading is on the - side, liner is lower than the
block face.
c. Repeat step b at two other locations on liner. Use average of the three readings as actual liner height.
d. Cylinder liner height should be 0-.003 inch above cylinder deck face.
e. Check liner-to-liner height with tool J-29766, or equivalent. Install adjacent liners with O-ring. Liner-to-liner height should be -.002 to +.002
inch. Mark liners in measured positions.
7. When installing liners into block, check alignment marks. Be sure to install O-ring onto liner.
