Harmonic Balancer - Crankshaft Pulley: Service and Repair

CRANKSHAFT BALANCER

REMOVAL

1. Remove negative battery cable.
2. Remove serpentine belt.
3. Raise car on hoist.
4. Remove right front tire.
5. Remove right front air deflector.
6. Loosen and reposition heater by-pass line.
7. Lower passenger side engine cradle if needed for access.
8. Remove plug or bolt and washer from end of crankshaft.
9. Remove pulley bolts if equipped.

10. Install puller pilot, in crankshaft bore.
11. Install Puller.
12. Tighten puller screw with a wrench until damper/hub is free.

INSTALLATION

1. Lubricate hub bore with EP (extreme pressure) lubricant.
2. Position damper on crankshaft.  Make sure that the hub key slot lines up with the crankshaft key.
3. Install hub with installer until tool bottoms out.

NOTE:  Use of shop air pressure may be used to hold one piston within its compression stroke without turning the crankshaft. Remove a spark
plug and install adapter J-22794, or equivalent, finger tight in spark plug port. Apply air pressure to hold piston within its compression stroke.
Adapter should not be wrench tightened.

4. Install crankshaft pulley, (if equipped). Apply Loctite to pulley bolts and tighten to 20 Ft. Lbs. (27 Nm).

5. Raise engine cradle (if lowered).
6. Secure heater bypass line.
7. Install front air deflector.
8. Install right front tire.
9. Lower car.

10. Install serpentine belt.
11. Reconnect negative battery cable.
12. Recheck work for leaks and completeness.
