Front Crankshaft Seal: Service and Repair

FRONT COVER OIL SEAL REPLACEMENT

  Removal

1. Remove crankshaft damper.

2. Using tools J 1859-03 and J 23129, remove and discard oil seal.

Installation

1. Polish damper hub seal surface with fine emery cloth.
2. Lubricate new oil seal lips with engine oil and position seal on end of crankshaft with garter spring side toward engine.

3. Using Seal Installer, J 29662, and hammer, drive seal into front cover until tool bottoms against front cover. Note that tool J 29662 has been

designed so that the front cover seal can also be pressed on using balancer hub installer J 29774 if it is inconvenient to hammer the seal in place.

4. Install crankshaft damper.
