Information
On January 3, 1995, a new design for the front wheel hub and bearing and the front wheel speed sensor was phased into production on all of the
above-listed 1995 vehicles that have anti-lock brakes.
The 1st design (previously used) hub and bearing assembly (hub and bearing w/sensor) is no longer available as a service part. The 2nd design hub and
bearing assembly will fit all vehicles when hub and bearing replacement is necessary. However, the 1st design wheel speed sensor is still available to
service any vehicles with 1st design hub and bearing where only a wheel speed sensor replacement is needed.
The 1st design sensor service kit P/N is 10457144. The 2nd design sensor service kit P/N is 10457282. The visual difference between the sensors can be
identified by the slinger ring at the outside of the sensor. The 1st design sensor slinger ring is raised. The 2nd design sensor slinger ring is about flush
with the sensor housing. See illustration.
Replacing the Wheel Speed Sensor
Notice:
Installation of an incorrect wheel speed sensor will result in premature bearing failure. Refer to the illustration to determine which wheel speed
sensor kit is required.
Notice:
The new style (2nd design) wheel speed sensor requires the use of a new special tool to press the sensor onto the hub and bearing. The new
Kent-Moore tool J 38764-4 must be used to install the (2nd design) sensor onto the (2nd design) hub and bearing. Failure to use the proper
installation tool will cause damage to the sensor, hub and bearing.
Important:
When replacing the wheel speed sensor, do not allow dirt or other foreign material to tall into bearing. Also, DO NOT add or remove wheel bearing
grease. The wheel bearing is permanently lubricated and grease contamination or excessive grease may cause the bearing to fail later. THE
PRESENCE OF GREASE ON THE TOOTHED SENSOR RING INSIDE THE BEARING ASSEMBLY IS NORMAL AND DOES NOT AFFECT
SENSOR OPERATION.
Important:
The new sensor and slinger are pre-assembled. DO NOT remove the slinger from the new sensor prior to installation. If the slinger is removed, the
parts are damaged and cannot be used.
1.
Remove front wheel hub and bearing assembly from vehicle as described in the Service Manual (see On-Vehicle Service in Section 3C).
2.
Clean all dirt and debris from entire assembly before removing sensor.
3.
Using split plate puller (Kent-Moore tool J 22912-01 or equivalent), remove sensor and slinger from bearing assembly.
Important:
If there is evidence of water being present inside the bearing or sensor, replace the entire hub and bearing assembly.
