Disassembly
1.
Remove boot and silencer from rear of housing.
2.
Remove check valve and grommet, front seal, and vacuum switch and grommet, if equipped, from front housing.
3.
Scribe matching marks between front and rear housings to aid assembly, then mount booster assembly in suitable holding fixture with rear housing
facing up, Fig. 7.
4.
Apply pressure to hold housing together, then rotate front housing counterclockwise to unlock housing.
5.
Slowly release pressure on booster assembly, then remove rear housing assembly, power piston and diaphragm assembly and diaphragm spring,
Fig. 6. Care must be taken when separating booster housing not to allow sudden release of spring tension, as damage or personal injury
may result.
6.
Remove power piston bearing from rear housing.
7.
Remove master cylinder piston rod and reaction retainer from power piston.
8.
Pry out filter using suitable pointed tool.
9.
Grasp power piston at outer edges of diaphragm and support plate, then separate power piston by rapping pedal pushrod against work surface.
10.
Clean components as outlined in ``General Service'' and replace as needed. Power piston and pushrod assembly should not be disassembled. If
replacement is required, these components are serviced as an assembly.
Assembly
1.
Lubricate inner lip of diaphragm and fit diaphragm into support plate.
2.
Place power piston on work surface with pedal pushrod facing up, then mount diaphragm and support plate assembly over piston.
3.
Install new diaphragm retainer, then seat retainer and diaphragm assembly using driver J-28458 or equivalent and suitable hammer.
4.
Seat new filter into rear of power piston assembly, then install reaction retainer and master cylinder piston pushrod, Fig. 6.
5.
Mount front housing in holding fixture, then position diaphragm return spring in housing, with white coil flush against housing.

Install power piston bearing and piston assembly in rear housing, then position rear housing assembly over front housing ensuring that matching
marks are aligned.
7.
Ensure that all components are properly aligned, apply pressure to rear housing with holding fixture forcing screw, Fig. 7, then rotate rear housing
clockwise to lock position. Assembly of housing can be aided by applying vacuum to port in front housing.
8.
Stake housing tabs in 2 locations, 180° apart to secure assembly, but do not reuse tabs that have already been staked.
9.
Lubricate and install front housing grommets, then press check valve and vacuum switch, if equipped, into grommets.
10.
Install front housing seal, silencer and boot.
