Drive/Propeller Shaft: Service and Repair
1.
Raise vehicle on hoist with transmission in neutral. Mark propeller shaft relationship to axle pinion flange to maintain balance.

On 1982---83 models, remove propeller shaft flange retaining bolts. On 1984---88 models, remove rear universal joint-to-pinion flange attaching
clamp nuts and clamps.Do not allow propeller shaft to be supported by front or center universal joint, as damage to universal joint may
result. Rear of propeller shaft must be supported to underbody of vehicle.

Pull propeller shaft forward to clear pinion flange and support rear end of shaft. Place a suitable container under transmission, to catch any
fluid which may leak when slip joint is removed.
4.
On two piece type propeller shafts, remove the two center bearing supports to frame bolts and nuts.
5.
On all types, slide propeller shaft rearward until slip yoke comes off transmission output shaft. Place a protective device such as a cardboard
shipping cover, over yoke. This will prevent damage to yoke when shaft is removed.
6.
Remove shaft and install a spare yoke into transmission extension housing to prevent loss of oil.
7.
Reverse procedure to install. On 1982---83 models, torque flange attaching bolts to 70 ft. lbs. On 1984---88 models, torque rear universal joint-to-
pinion flange attaching clamp nuts to 16 ft. lbs.
8.
Check transmission oil.
