SUBJECT:
NOISE FROM POWER STEERING
MODELS AFFECTED: 1989-1990 BROUGHAMS
Some 1989-1990 Broughams may experience a moan-type noise while turning the steering wheel. This condition may be caused by an improperly
aligned intermediate shaft stone shield. To verify that the stone shield is the source of the noise, raise the car and turn the steering wheel without the
engine running. If the noise is caused by the stone shield, you should be able to eliminate it by sliding the stone shield off of the gear.
To repair this condition use the following procedure:
1.
Raise car.
2.
Make sure the stone shield is not being pushed out of place by the ABS brake lines or other components.
3.
Disconnect stone shield from the intermediate shaft and slide rearward.

4.
Lubricate with 3M silicone, P/N 051135-08936 or equivalent, inside of shield as shown in Figure 1.
5.
File sharp edge of intermediate shaft as shown in Figure 1.
6.
Reinstall stone shield.
7.
Turn wheel to verify the noise is gone.
8.
Lower car.
