Windshield Washer Pump Replacement

Some 1985-86 De Villes and Fleetwoods may require a windshield washer pump motor replacement due to an inoperative washer pump.

Washer pumps require a constant flow of washer fluid to provide cooling for the pump. Without fluid flow the washer pump will overheat and become
inoperative. Therefore, two steps should be performed when replacing a washer pump motor to ensure fluid flow.

Check system for restrictions. Specifically inspect the check valve (see Figure 1) for debris. Also check for a plugged reservoir screen, kinked
or restricted hoses, and plugged nozzles.

Before installing new pump, place a few drops of washer fluid (concentrated or dilute) in the pump inlet tube. Install the pump and connect
the inlet and outlet hoses. Operate the system two or three times to prime the system and check operation. The drops in the inlet tube provide
lubrication to protect the pump while it is priming.
