Fuel Supply Line: Description and Operation
FUEL TANK

The fuel tank is attached under and to the rear of the vehicle by two straps.

The filler neck is soldered into the tank and contains a restrictor to prevent the entry of leaded fuel nozzles.

The tank is vented during filling by an internal baffle inside the filler.

The tank sending unit consists of a combination fuel pick-up, filter, fuel gauge sending unit and fuel pump. The sending unit can be removed by
removing a cam ring which retains the unit.
FUEL AND VAPOR LINES
Nylon fuel lines are designed to perform the same function as the steel or rubber lines they replace. Nylon lines are constructed to withstand maximum
fuel system pressure, exposure to fuel additives, and changes in temperature. Both fuel feed and return line size is 5/16" ID. The vapor line size is 1/4"
ID.
The fuel feed, return, and vapor lines are assembled as a harness. Retaining clips hold the lines together and provide a means for attaching the lines to
the vehicle. Quick-connect type fittings are used at the ends of the fuel feed/return lines and at the in-line fuel filter. Sections of the lines that are
exposed to chafing, high temperature or vibration are protected with heat resistant rubber hose and/or coextruded conduit.
Nylon fuel lines are somewhat flexible and can be formed around gradual turns under the vehicle. However, if forced into sharp bends, nylon lines will
kink and restrict fuel flow. Also, once exposed to fuel, nylon fuel lines tend to become stiffer and are more likely to kink if bent too far. Some special
care should be taken when working on a vehicle with nylon fuel lines.
There are two types of quick connect fittings, each is used at different locations in the fuel system. Each type consists of a unique female socket and a
compatible male connector. O-rings, located inside the female socket, provide the seal. The quick connect fittings used at the fuel filter and other
connections at the rear of the vehicle have hand releasable locking tabs. The fittings used at the engine fuel pipes have locking tabs that require a special
tool to release.
FUEL CAP
The fuel cap is a screw on type for all series and incorporates a ratchet action which prevents overtightening. A pressure/vacuum safety relief valve is
incorporated into all caps. If a fuel cap requires replacement, only a cap with these same features should be used. Failure to use the correct cap can
result in a serious malfunction of the system. Correct replacement caps may be obtained from your dealer.
