1.
Remove valve lifters, refer to ``Valve Lifters, Replace.''
2.
Using a small screwdriver, remove retainer ring, Figs. 41 and 42.
3.
Remove pushrod seat, oil metering valve, plunger and plunger spring.
4.
Remove check ball retainer from plunger, then remove ball and spring.
5.
Clean parts in a suitable solvent.Do not interchange parts between lifters. If any parts are worn, replace lifter.
6.
Inspect all parts for nicks, burrs or scoring. If any parts are defective, replace lifter.
7.
On 1981 and 1983---84 roller lifters, inspect roller. It should rotate freely, but without excessive play, also check for missing or broken needle
bearing. If any parts are defective, replace lifter.
8.
Apply a coating of light engine oil to all lifter surfaces.
9.
Install ball check spring and retainer into plunger. Ensure retainer flange is pressed tight against bottom of recess in plunger.
10.
Install plunger spring over check retainer.
11.
Hold plunger with spring up and insert in lifter body. Hold plunger vertically to prevent cocking spring.
12.
Submerge lifter assembly in clean diesel fuel or kerosene, then install oil metering valve and pushrod seat into lifter and install retaining ring.
