    1981 and 1983---84 engines are equipped with roller lifters. These are the same internally as in the past. However, the lifter cannot be ``leak down''
tested at this time as a tester adapter is not available. On this type lifter, a guide holds the lifters from rotating, Fig. 39. A spring steel retainer holds the
guide in place.
    In addition, some engines have both standard and .010 inch oversize valve lifters. The .010 inch oversize valve lifters are etched with a ``0'' on the side
of the lifter. Also, the cylinder block will be marked if an oversize lifter is used, Fig. 40.

Remove intake manifold as outlined previously.

Remove valve covers, rocker arm assemblies and pushrods. On 1981 and 1983---84 models, remove the lifter retainer and lifter guides. Note
location of valve train components so they can be installed in original position.

Remove valve lifters.

4.

Reverse procedure to install.
