Town & Country V6-3.8L VIN L (2006)
INSTALLATION
1. If necessary, install the outer tie rod ends onto the inner tie rod threads. As the outer tie rods are installed, count out the same number rotations as
were counted on tie rod removal. This will get the toe setting somewhat close to specification before the vehicle is aligned at the end of this
procedure. Snug the tie rod jam nuts on both ends of the gear. Do not fully tighten at this time. Tighten the tie rod jam nuts to specification while
peffornring the wheel alignment at the end of this procedure.
2. Pull outward on the right side tie rods (or push inward on left side tie rods) until the internal stop is met. This action to shorten the length of the
left side tie rods is important for gear installation in the following steps.
3. Install the steering gear into the vehicle as follows:
a. Guide the right side tie rods up through the center opening in the cradle crossmember reinforcement and out through the passenger side
opening between the cradle crossmember and the reinforcement (Figure 2).
b. Lift the left side tie rods up through the opening, then shift the entire steering gear to the left until the gear is centered in the cradle
crossmember.
c. Place the steering gear up into mounted position and install the three steering gear mounting bolts and nuts (Figure 8). Tighten the three
mounting bolts to the following torque values:
-
14 mm bolt - 183 Nm (135 ft. lbs.)
-
12 mm bolt - 95 Nm (70 ft. lbs.)
