Daewoo Motor America has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 1998 and 1999 Lanos models. There is a
possibility that the steering wheel could become damaged from over-rotation. If this were to occur, it is possible that a loss of steering control could
occur which could lead to a vehicle crash.
To eliminate the possibility of breakage and the resulting effect on vehicle steering, Daewoo has decided to recall these Lanos models and replace the
steering wheel with an improved version.
All unsold new vehicles in Store's possession and subject to this campaign must be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this
campaign bulletin before owners take possession of these vehicles.
Stores are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time
forward.
Current Lanos owners and drivers will be notified in writing and will be calling to schedule an appointment to have their steering wheel replaced.
Whenever practical, offer to travel to the customer's home, place of business, etc. for steering wheel replacement. An initial shipment of parts sufficient
for Store stock, sold vehicles and DCA vehicles has been sent to each Store. Make certain you have adequate stock of Lanos steering wheels on hand
before scheduling appointments.
In summary, whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign enters your vehicle inventory, or is in your Store for service in the future, please take the steps
necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE:
Verify that the vehicle has not been updated previously by checking for a punch mark to the left of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) stamped
into the bulkhead in the engine compartment. If a punch mark does not exist, proceed to the Steering Wheel Removal/Installation Procedures. If a punch
mark does exist, the update has already been completed.
STEERING WHEEL REMOVAL / INSTALLATION PROCEDURES
Steering Wheel Removal:
1.
Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery.
CAUTION:
The battery must be disconnected for at least one (1) minute before servicing any air bag system component.
