Knocking Sound Coming From The Engine Compartment

NOTE

THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO DURANGOS BUILT BEFORE DEC. 5, 1997 (MDH 1205XX) AND DAKOTAS BUILT BEFORE DEC. 22,
1997 (MDH 1222XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:

A knocking noise can be heard coming from the engine compartment. The noise occurs only while the engine is running and is most noticeable at an idle.
The noise may be confused with the sound of a connecting rod bearing with excessive clearance.

DIAGNOSIS:

Open the hood of the vehicle and inspect the "U-shaped" mounting bracket of the purge solenoid. If the U-shaped purge solenoid mounting bracket is
facing up (as shown in Figure 1), perform the following Repair Procedure.
