THIS BULLETIN APPLIES TO FOUR WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLES.
DISCUSSION:
The lower ball joint on the subject 4X4 vehicles can now be serviced separately without the replacement of the lower control arm. Special tool 8345 (ball
joint receiver) was shipped to Dodge Truck dealers in Special Tool Kit 8310 or 8310CC during the first week of May, 1998.
The Diagnosis provides information to properly diagnose lower ball joints and the following Repair Procedure provides the removal and installation
procedures for the lower ball joint. In addition, lower ball joint service procedures will be included in the 1999 Service Manuals for the above vehicles.
DIAGNOSIS:
NOTE:
THE BALL JOINT MUST BE GREASED AND A ROAD TEST PERFORMED PRIOR TO PERFORMING THIS DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE.
1.
Raise the front of the vehicle. Place safety floor stands under both lower suspension arms as far outboard as possible. Lower the vehicle to allow
the stands to support the weight of the vehicle.
NOTE:
THE UPPER SUSPENSION ARMS MUST NOT CONTACT THE REBOUND BUMPERS.
2.
Remove the tire and wheel assembly.
3.
Mount a dial indicator solidly under the lower suspension arm.
4.
Position the dial indicator plunger against the bottom surface of the steering knuckle lower ball joint boss (Figure 1).
