Eagle Sedan L6-258 4.2L (1984)
6. Place ignition lock in "run" position.
7. To remove buzzer switch, insert a hooked wire through exposed loop of wedge spring and pull straight out. Remove lock retaining screw from
housing and remove lock cylinder. If lock cylinder is not removed before buzzer switch, buzzer switch must be in the "on" position. If wedge
spring is dropped into column during removal, it may require complete disassembly of column to remove it.
8. Remove cover retaining screws and cover, then remove race and seat from shaft.
9. Reinstall tilt release lever and place column in full "up" position, then remove tilt spring retainer using a screwdriver and depressing retainer about
3/16 inch and turning about 1/8 turn counterclockwise until gears align with grooves in housing and remove spring and guide.
10. With ignition switch in "off-unlock" position, remove ignition switch.
11. Using tool J-21854-1, disengage lock shoe by depressing tilt housing upward to free shoes and moving housing to the left to separate rack from
actuator.
12. Remove spacer from lower end of shaft and remove shaft from column.
13. Disconnect end of actuator rod from rack and remove from column, then remove the four support screws and remove support.
14. Slightly rotate lockplate counterclockwise and remove, then remove shroud retaining screws and shroud.
15. Should bearing need replacement, slide dash bracket off jacket and tap around adapter using a flat punch.
16. To disassemble bearing housing:
a. Remove tilt lever shield from housing, then remove lock bolt spring by removing spring retaining screw and turning spring clockwise to
remove it from screw.
b. If used, remove sector shaft snap ring, then using a punch, drive shaft from sector and remove rack, spring, shim (if used) and sector bolt.
c. Remove tilt release lever pin, release lever and spring. To relieve tension on release lever, hold shoes inward and wedge block between
top of shoes and bearing housing.
d. Remove lock shoe pin, lock shoes and springs.
e. If necessary, remove separator and balls from bearing, then using a punch, carefully drive race out of housing until bearing puller can be used.
Repeat step for other race and do not reuse bearing.
17. To disassemble shroud housing:
a. Remove key release lever, then tip release lever forward and lift up. Spring on lever may be removed, if necessary.
Assembly
Apply lithium grease to all friction surfaces except lock, lock bolt and lock bolt hole.
1. To assemble shroud housing:
a. Position spring on key release lever and into shroud slot, then compress spring by forcing with lever. Lever will slip into shroud slot.
2. To assemble bearing housing:
a. If removed, install bearings into bearing housing, then install lock shoe springs, lock shoe and shoe pin. Use a 0.180 inch dia. rod to align
shoes for pin installation.
b. Install spring, release lever and pin into bearing housing. Relieve load on release lever as in disassembly procedure.
c. Install drive shaft into housing and lightly tap sector onto shaft until snap ring groove is exposed. If snap ring was removed, replace with new
one.
d. Install lock bolt and engage with sector cam surface, then install rack, spring and shim (if used). Engage block tooth on rack with block tooth
on sector and install tilt release lever.
e. Install bolt spring and retaining screw and torque to 35 inch lbs.
3. Slide shroud onto bowl and align holes, then install screws and torque to 30 inch lbs.
4. Position and work lock plate toward bowl in jacket by tipping lock plate toward bowl hub at 12 o'clock position and under jacket opening and into
notches in jacket.
5. Align "V" notch of support with notch in jacket and press support into jacket. Press key release lever to fully seat support.
6. Install support retaining screws and torque to 50 inch lbs.
7. Install actuator rod through bowl and into slot in support. Install centering spheres and anti-lash spring in upper shaft, then install steering shaft
while turning slowly to clear seal and slide spacer onto bottom of shaft.
8. Hold lock shoes in disengaged position and assemble bearing housing over steering shaft until pivot pin holes align with holes in support.
9. Install pivot pins as far as possible using hand pressure, then complete installation using a hammer and punch.
10. With housing in full "up" position, install guide, then apply grease between guide and peg on support and install tilt spring and retainer. Using a
screwdriver, turn retainer clockwise to engage.
11. Install shield into housing and remove tilt release lever, then install housing cover and screws and torque to 100 inch lbs., starting with the
uppermost screw.
12. Assemble buzzer switch onto spring clip with formed end of clip bowed away from switch on side opposite contact. Push switch and spring into
cover with contacts facing lock cylinder bore.
13. Install signal switch and wires, then depress hazard warning switch and install screws and torque to 35 inch lbs.
14. Install hazard warning knob and pull knob out, then install inner race, seat, preload spring, cancelling cam and shaft lock.
15. Depress lock plate and install new wire snap ring, then install tilt release lever, turn signal lever, upper shift lever and pivot pin.
16. To install lock, hold lock cylinder sleeve and rotate knob clockwise against stop, then insert cylinder into cover bore with key on cylinder sleeve
aligned with keyway in housing and push in to abutment of cylinder and sector. Install lock retaining screw in housing and torque to 22 in. lbs.
17. Install shaft lock cover and torque retaining screws to 15 inch lbs.
18. To install ignition switch, place lock cylinder in "off-unlock" position, then place ignition switch in "off-unlock" position, by moving slider to the
extreme right and then moving to the left two clicks. Install actuator rod onto slider and using the correct screws, assemble switch onto column.
Lightly push switch downward and torque screws to 35 inch lbs. Use care to avoid moving switch out of detent.
19. Snap wire connector onto column and install wire protector.
