Steering Gear: Adjustments

STEERING GEAR PRELOAD

NOTE: The steering gears used on this model are not repairable. They are serviced as assemblies only and should not be disassembled. The manual
steering gear has provisions for adjusting preload. The power steering gear does not require any type of adjustment.

ADJUST

The preload adjustment is performed with the gear mounted in the vehicle.

1. Unlock tabs on the adjusting nut.
2. Pry tabs upward and out of notches in the gear housing.
3. Tighten the adjusting nut until gear turning effort increases.
4. Back off adjuster nut one notch.
5. Secure adjusting nut by seating the nut tabs in the corresponding housing notches.
