The Japanese legislative standard TRIAS 30-1983 ED. 19-05-1989 requires a system for protecting vehicles from overheating of the catalytic converter.

This generally reaches temperatures which remain below 750 °C even under maximum speed conditions.

If for unexpected reasons this threshold is exceeded, the system indicates the danger by means of a warning light located on the instrument panel.

OPERATION

Upstream of the catalytic converter, there is a thermocouple (7) which can withstand temperatures exceeding 1000 °C.

This is connected to the temperature control unit (1) which intervenes at 840 °C ± 25 °C and causes the light on the instrument panel to come on.

If the catalytic converter overheating warning light (3) stays on permanently, it is necessary to decelerate rapidly until the car stops, and then turn off the engine.
