Engine Cooling - 2.0L Duratorq-TDCi (DW) Diesel - Cooling System Draining, Filling and Bleeding C-MAX 2003.75 (06/2003-)
General Procedures

Draining

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:When releasing the cooling system pressure, cover the coolant expansion tank cap with a thick cloth to prevent the possibility of scalding. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:The cooling system pressure will be vented to the underside of the coolant expansion tank.
    Release the cooling system pressure by slowly turning the coolant expansion tank cap between 2 and 3 turns.
  1. Remove the coolant expansion tank cap.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.

  1. Remove the engine undershield.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:To avoid the removal of an excessive volume of coolant, the cooling system should only be drained from the radiator drain plug.
    Drain the cooling system.
    • Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
  1. Install the radiator drain plug.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

Filling and Bleeding

NOTE:
NOTE:Make sure the interior heater temperature control switch is in the hot position.
  1. Switch the interior heater blower off.

  1. Remove the bleed screw from the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler coolant hose.
  1. Fill the coolant expansion tank to level with the bottom of the coolant expansion tank filler neck and until coolant begins to flow from the bleed hole in the EGR cooler coolant hose.

  1. Install the bleed screw to the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler coolant hose.
  1. Start the engine.
CAUTION:
CAUTION:Do not allow the coolant level in the coolant expansion tank to fall below the minimum mark.
  1. Raise the engine speed to 2000 revolutions per minute (RPM) and maintain for 2 minutes.
  1. Top up the coolant expansion tank coolant level to the MAX mark.
  1. Install the coolant expansion tank cap.
  1. Raise the engine speed to 2000 RPM and maintain for approximately 13 minutes until the thermostat opens.
  1. Increase the engine speed to 4000 RPM and maintain for 5 seconds.
  1. Decrease the engine speed to 2000 RPM and maintain for 15 minutes.
  1. Switch the engine off.
  1. Check the cooling system for leaks.
  1. Allow the engine to cool.
  1. Top up the coolant expansion tank to the MAX mark.
