Disassembly

All vehicles
NOTE:
NOTE:Use vise jaws protectors for all operations in a vise.
  1. Clamp the differential in a vise.

  1. Using the special tools, remove the differential roller bearing.

  1. Using the special tools, remove the differential roller bearing.
All except vehicles with diesel engine
  1. Remove the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) sensor ring.
Vehicles with diesel engine
  1. Remove the speedometer drive gear.
All vehicles
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Leave three ring gear retaining bolts loosely installed. These should be evenly distributed around the circumference of the ring gear.
    Remove the ring gear.
    1. Loosen the bolts and remove seven retaining bolts.
    1. Using a soft faced hammer, lightly tap the three remaining retaining bolts to release the ring gear from the differential case.
    • Discard the bolts.

Assembly

All vehicles
NOTE:
NOTE:If installing new roller bearings, do not lubricate the bearings.
  1. Carefully clean and check all parts and coat with manual transmission fluid before assembly.
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Use vise jaws protectors for all operations in a vise.
    Clamp the differential in a vise.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Tighten the ring gear retaining bolts finger tight and then evenly by two turns at a time to the specified torque.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Install new ring gear retaining bolts.
    Install the ring gear.
Vehicles with diesel engine
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The speedometer drive gear must snap into position.
    Install the speedometer drive gear.
All except vehicles with diesel engine
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The VSS sensor ring must snap into position.
    Install the VSS sensor ring.
All vehicles
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Using a suitable press, install the roller bearing.
    Using the special tool, install the differential roller bearing.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Using a suitable press, install the roller bearing.
    Using the special tool, install the differential roller bearing.
