Contour V6-153 2.5L DOHC (1996)
24. Remove four remaining steering gear cover bolts and cover.
25. Remove two steering gear bolts and gear.
Installation
1. Position steering gear to subframe and install two bolts. Tighten bolts to 137 N-m (101 lb-ft).
2. Position steering gear cover and install four bolts. Tighten bolts to 50 N-m (37 lb-ft).
3. Position rear insulator, align it with reference marks, and install two bolts. Tighten bolts to 48 N-m (35 lb-ft).
4. Replace old Teflon seals on steering pressure and return hose unions with new Teflon seals.
5. Position subframe and powertrain lift under vehicle.
6. Lift and align subframe to body. Align left and right ball joints to knuckles and position steering gear to steering column. Route steering pressure
and return hoses into position at the rear of subframe. Securely install steering hoses. Securely install two bolts retaining cooler lines at rear of
subframe. Position steering cooler line bracket and securely install nut, at right front of subframe.
7. Install subframe Alignment Pin Set T94P-2100-AH or equivalent into subframe and install four subframe-to-body bolts. Tighten bolts to 130 N-m
(96 lb-ft). Install cooler lines at right front of vehicle. Position clamps.
8. Remove alignment pin set from subframe. Lower and remove powertrain lift.
9. Observe left and right engine support insulators to make sure there is correct front-to-rear alignment. Install left engine support insulator through
bolts. Tighten bolts to 120 N-m (89 lb-ft).
10. Install steering column pinch bolt. Tighten bolt to 24 N-m (18 lb-ft).
11. Position front left and right bumper cover braces to the side of subframe. Securely install retainer and bolts.
12. Position lower left and right radiator support brackets to subframe. Install four bolts and tighten them to 10 N-m (89 lb-in).
13. Position A/C accumulator bracket and securely install two bolts to subframe.
14. Install a new converter inlet gasket on flex pipe. Position crossover pipe flanges to manifolds and flex tube to converter. Connect converter pipe
assembly and rubber exhaust hanger. Loosely install four crossover pipe flange-to-manifold retainers and three flex pipe-to-crossover nuts.
Position exhaust bracket at the oil pan and loosely install nut.
15. Install exhaust bracket and flex tube nuts. Tighten nuts to 35 N-m (26 lb-ft).
16. Install crossover pipe flange-to-exhaust manifold nuts. Tighten nuts to 40 N-m (30 lb-ft).
17. Connect H02S locators to bracket and subframe. Connect H02S connectors.
18. Install left and right ball joint pinch bolts and nuts. Tighten retainers to 83 N-m (61 lb-ft).
19. Connect left and right stabilizer bar links to front struts. Install nuts and tighten them to 47 N-m (35 lb-ft). If equipped, install ABS wiring harness
retainer to stabilizer bar link stud.
20. Lower vehicle.
21. Position left and right tie rod ends to steering knuckles. Install tie rod end nuts. Tighten nuts to 31 N-m (23 lb-ft), then continue to nearest cotter
pin slot and insert new cotter pins.
22. Install both front wheel assemblies. Tighten wheel nuts to 85 N-m (63 lb-ft).
23. Raise vehicle.
24. Position front air deflector and install nine screws.
25. Lower vehicle.
26. Remove three bar engine support.
