Torque Converter: Testing and Inspection
With CD4E
INSPECTION
1. Check for leakage as follows:
a. Inspect torque converter welds. If leakage is indicated, remove converter.
b. Assemble Rotunda Torque Converter Leak Test Kit tool No. 021-00054 or equivalent to converter, then check for leakage according to test kit
manufacturer's instructions.
2. Check one-way clutch as follows:
Torque Converter One-Way Clutch Inspection
a. Insert 0-ring tool No. T71P-19703-C or equivalent in slot on bottom of stator.
b. While holding tool, rotate inner race. One-way clutch should hold in counterclockwise direction and rotate in clockwise direction as viewed
from converter opening.
c. If results are not as indicated, replace converter.
3. Check pump insert as follows:
Torque Converter Pump Insert Inspection
a. Install oil pump driveshaft in torque converter, then fit a torque wrench with a 5/16 Allen head socket onto shaft.
b. Rotate torque wrench while holding converter still. Insert should hold a torque of 10 ft lbs.
c. If results are not as indicated, replace converter.
4. Check turbine torque as follows:
a. Install endplay checking tool No. T80L-7902-A and endplay checking tool sleeve tool No. T94P-77000-V or equivalents in torque converter
turbine splines.
b. Attach torque wrench to assembled tools, then rotate wrench while holding converter still. Torque required to turn turbine should not exceed
4.4 ft lbs.
