Reason For This Program
On some of these vehicles, welds that attach certain brackets to the frames may crack. The brackets provide the rear attachments of the front suspension
lower control arms to the vehicle frame rails. Ford's investigation shows that cracks in the welds of a bracket develop progressively and result in creaking
noises under normal driving conditions and clunking noises and a "pull" during braking prior to full separation of the bracket. If the noises and the
braking pull were ignored and a frame bracket were to separate completely from a frame rail, steering would be less precise but steering capability would
be substantially retained.

Service Action
The affected area is to be inspected for incomplete welds, cold welds, cracks in the weld areas, and welds that are off location. Also, the affected
brackets are to be inspected for cracks. Areas with incomplete or cold welds and cracked areas will be repaired.

Regarding Program RSP And Previously Inspected Vehicles

VEHICLES PREVIOUSLY INSPECTED FOR THIS CONDITION UNDER PROGRAM RSP ARE TO BE REINSPECTED PER THE
UPDATED PROCEDURES INCLUDED IN ATTACHMENT III. CUSTOMERS ARE BEING ASKED TO RETURN THEIR VEHICLES FOR
REINSPECTION. SUBMIT ALL REINSPECTION AND/OR CLAIMS AGAINST PROGRAM 96B98 ONLY.

 
This Owner Notification Program supersedes Program RSP which is cancelled affective immediately. Claims against Program RSP with repair dates
after August 23, 1996 will be rejected. AFFECTED VEHICLES MUST BE SERVICED UNDER THIS PROGRAM, 96B98, RATHER THAN
PROGRAM RSP.

Rental Vehicles
If inspection reveals that parts need to be ordered, Ford Motor Company will pay for a loaner or rental vehicle, except for fuel which will be at owner's
expense for up to four days. This time limit is being set because parts, if needed, are available by overnight delivery (see instructions in Attachment II for
situations which require parts).It is anticipated that parts will be required in very few cases.
