Valve Spring: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
NOTE: If, during this procedure, air pressure has forced the piston to the bottom of the cylinder, any loss of air pressure will allow the valve to fall into
the cylinder. A rubber band, tape or string wrapped around the end of the valve stem will prevent this and still allow enough travel to check the valve for
binding and excess guide to valve stem clearance.
1.
Remove valve covers.
2.
Remove roller followers.
3.
Remove spark plug, then position piston at top of stroke with both valves closed.
4.
Install suitable air line with adapter in spark plug opening, then apply air pressure. Failure of air pressure to hold valves closed is an indication of
valve or valve seat damage that may require cylinder head removal.
5.
Install 0.40 inch shim between spring coils.
6.
Using Valve Spring Compressor tool T91P-6565-A or equivalent, compress valve spring.
7.
Remove keepers, retainer and valve spring.
8.
Repeat steps 3 through 8 as required for additional cylinders.
INSTALLATION
1.
Piston must be at Top Dead Center (TDC) of cylinder being serviced.
2.
Remove air pressure, then inspect valve stem for damage. Rotate valve and check valve stem tip eccentric movement during rotation.
3.
Position valve up and down through normal travel and check stem for binding. If valve has been damaged. It will be necessary to remove cylinder
head for service.
4.
If valve condition is good, apply engine oil to valve stem and hold valve closed, then apply air pressure in cylinder.
5.
Position valve spring and retainer over valve stem.
6.
Install 0.40 inch shim between spring coils.
7.
Compress valve spring, then install keepers.
8.
Turn off air supply, then remove adapter from spark plug opening.
9.
Install spark plug, then roller follower and valve cover.
10.
Start engine and check for leaks.
