Pinion Gear: Service and Repair
WARNING: Handle pinion gear carefully to prevent injury.
CAUTION: The drive pinion preload spacer (Model 70) and the pinion shim assembly sequence must be followed. If the sequence is not followed and
the components are improperly assembled, unit failure can result.
NOTE:
-
On the spline end of the pinion, there are pinion shims. These pinion shims may stick to the pinion or bearing or even fall out. These pinion
shims are to be collected and kept together for reassembly. Try not to damage the pinion shims. If drive pinion shims are damaged, replace
them with new ones.
-
The Model 70 rear axles may also include a pinion bearing preload spacer with the inner pinion bearing preload shims.
1. Turn the nose of the rear axle differential carrier in a horizontal position and remove the pinion nut. Hold the pinion flange with a suitable
companion flange holding tool, and remove the pinion nut and drive pinion nut locking washer.
2. Remove the rear axle universal joint flange with the 2-Jaw Puller. Replace the pinion seal if the rear axle universal joint flange shows signs of
wear.
3. Remove the pinion by tapping it with a rawhide hammer and the (A) Pinion Shaft Thread Protector. Catch the pinion with your hand to prevent it
from falling and being damaged.
