Confirm that the A4LD 4x4 equipped Explorer was built between between 12/21/90 and 9/15/91 or built before 12/21/90 and had TSB
91-8-27 performed.

2.

Verify, in a road test, that the vibration and noise concern is in the 2800-3200 rpm range. (All Explorers have tachometers.)

3.

Install damper (F2TZ-4A263-A) on the axle pinion nose. Refer to Figure 1 at the end of this article.

a.

Use three (3) bolts (N805370-S100). Tighten the bolts to 40-60 lb.ft. (54-81 N-m).

b.

If alternate bolts are used, coat the threads with Threadlock 262 (E2FZ-19554-B) or an equivalent.

NOTE:
THIS PINION NOSE DAMPER IS SIMILAR IN APPEARANCE TO OTHER PINION NOSE DAMPERS USED WITH EXPLORERS AND OTHER
LIGHT TRUCKS. HOWEVER, IT IS UNIQUE AND OTHER SIMILAR DAMPERS WILL NOT WORK.

1600-1800 RPM RANGE (PRODUCTION FIX: 11/12/91)

A vibration or "moaning" noise may occur while driving in 4th gear (overdrive) in the 1,600-1,800 rpm range with the torque converter locked up. This
condition is caused by engine firing pulses generating powertrain resonant frequencies through the torque converter.

If service is required, use the following procedure to check for a vibration/"moan" noise and, if necessary, replace the torque converter.

1.

Check to see that the transmission build date is prior to 10/17/91.

2.

Road test the vehicle to be sure that the vibration/"moan" noise is evident in 4th gear with the torque converter locked up in the 1,600/1,800 rpm
range.

3.

If the concern is present under the described conditions, proceed as follows:

a.

Tap the brake pedal lightly with the left foot while maintaining a constant throttle position with the right foot. This unlocks the converter.

b.

If the "moan" disappears immediately, the concern is confirmed and the torque converter (F2TZ-7902-ARM) should be replaced. Refer to
the 1991/91 Explorer Service Manual, Section 07-01A, for service details.

c.

If the "moan" does not disappear, the concern is elsewhere and the torque converter should not be replaced.
