Front Suspension - Lower Arm Focus 1999 (08/1998-12/2004)
Removal and Installation

Removal

  1. Remove the wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.

  1. Detach the engine undershield from the fender splash shield on both sides (if equipped).

  1. Remove the engine undershield (if equipped).

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Protect the ball joint seal using a soft cloth to prevent damage.
    Detach the lower arm ball joint from the wheel knuckle.
    • Remove the heat shield.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Note the position of the ball bearing washer, to aid installation.
    Remove the lower arm.
    1. Remove and discard the front retaining bolt.
    1. Remove and discard the rear clamp retaining nuts, bolts and ball bearing washer.

Installation

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Install new nuts, bolts and ball bearing washer.
    Install the lower arm retaining nuts, bolts and ball bearing washer.
    1. Tighten the nut in two stages.
      • 1. Stage 1: 100 Nm.

        2. Stage 2: 60 degrees.

    1. Tighten the nut.
    1. Tighten the bolt in two stages.
      • 1. Stage 1: 120 Nm.

        2. Stage 2: 90 degrees.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the heat shield is installed to prevent damage to the ball joint.
    Attach the lower arm ball joint to the wheel knuckle.

  1. Attach the engine undershield to the fender splash shield on both sides (if equipped).

  1. Install the engine undershield (if equipped).
  1. Install the wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.
  1. Check the toe setting and adjust as necessary. For additional information, refer to Section  204-00 Suspension System - General Information.
