  1. Release the fuel system pressure. For additional information, refer to Section  310-00A Fuel System - General Information / 310-00B Fuel System - General Information / 310-00C Fuel System - General Information.
  1. Remove the battery tray. For additional information, refer to Section  414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.
  1. Remove the air cleaner. For additional information, refer to Section  303-12 Intake Air Distribution and Filtering.
  1. Drain the cooling system. For additional information, refer to Section  303-03 Engine Cooling.
  1. Drain the engine oil.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Inspect the oil drain plug seal for damage. Install a new oil drain plug seal if necessary.
    Install the oil drain plug.

  1. Detach the ground cable from the inner fender.

  1. Loosen the strut and spring assembly top mount retaining nuts by three turns on both sides.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The resonator is a push fit in the bracket.
    Remove the air cleaner intake tube and resonator.

  1. Detach the accelerator cable and the speed control cable (if equipped) from the throttle body.

  1. Disconnect the ground cable from the engine lifting eye.

  1. Disconnect the fuel injector electrical connectors.

  1. Disconnect the generator electrical connector.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Escaping brake fluid. Do not allow brake fluid to come into contact with the skin or eyes. If brake fluid should come into contact with your skin or eyes, rinse the affected area immediately with water.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:If any brake fluid gets on the paintwork wash it off immediately with water.
    Detach the hydraulic line from the clutch slave cylinder.
    • Remove the clip.
    • Remove the clutch line and secure it to one side using cable ties.

  1. Disconnect the ignition coil electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the wiring harness electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the intake manifold.

  1. Detach the brake booster pipe from the intake manifold.
    • Release the quick release coupling and detach the brake booster pipe.

  1. Detach the coolant expansion tank and position it to one side.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Escaping fuel. Observe the safety regulations for working with fuel.
    Detach the fuel lines.

  1. Detach the coolant hoses from the thermostat housing.

  1. Detach the power steering high pressure pipe from the cylinder head.

  1. Remove the power steering pump upper retaining bolts.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.

  1. Detach the gearshift cables from the transaxle.
    1. Detach the gearshift cable and the selector cable from the selector levers.
    1. Detach the retaining bracket from the transaxle.
  1. Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to Section  303-05 Accessory Drive.
Vehicles with air conditioning

  1. Detach the air conditioning compressor and secure it to the radiator crossmember.
All vehicles

  1. Disconnect the coolant hose from the oil cooler.

  1. Using the special tool, disconnect the coolant hose from the water pump.

  1. Detach the power steering pump from the retaining bracket.

  1. Remove the flexible exhaust pipe.

  1. Disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the catalyst monitor sensor electrical connector.

  1. Remove the catalyst monitor sensor.

  1. Disconnect the heated oxygen (HO2S) sensor electrical connector.

  1. Remove the HO2S sensor.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The catalytic converter must be supported while the support bracket is removed.
    Remove the catalytic converter support bracket.

  1. Detach the catalytic converter from the exhaust manifold.
    • Discard the gasket and nuts.
  1. Remove the cooling fan motor and shroud. For additional information, refer to Section  303-03 Engine Cooling.

  1. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.

  1. Disconnect the reversing lamp switch electrical connector.

  1. Remove the engine roll restrictor.

  1. Detach the lower arm from the wheel knuckle on both sides.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    Detach the right-hand halfshaft from the intermediate shaft.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent at more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent at more than 45 degrees.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft oil seal.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Plug the transaxle to prevent oil loss or dirt ingress.
    Using the special tools, detach the left-hand halfshaft from the transaxle and secure it to one side.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
    • Discard the snap ring.
  1. Position the workshop table with suitable wooden blocks under the engine and transmission assembly.
  1. Carefully lower the vehicle until the engine and transmission assembly is positioned on the workshop table.

  1. Using a suitable securing strap, secure the engine and transmission assembly to the workshop table.

  1. Remove the engine rear mount.

  1. Remove the engine front mount.
  1. Carefully raise the vehicle.
    • Pull forwards the assembly stand.

  1. Using the special tools, secure the engine and transmission assembly on an engine hoist.

  1. Remove the transaxle upper retaining bolts.

  1. Remove the starter motor upper retaining bolts.
    • Detach the ground cable from the transaxle.

  1. Detach the starter motor from the transaxle and secure it to one side.

  1. Remove the transaxle right-hand retaining bolts.

  1. Remove the transaxle left-hand retaining bolts.
  1. Remove the transaxle.
