Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV)
The PCV system recycles crankcase gases back through the engine where they mix with the incoming air charge.
The crankcase ventilation system is a completely sealed system. All the combustion gases which enter the crankcase flow through hoses into the oil separator and then out of the engine cover into the intake air system.
The positive crankcase ventilation system helps to reduce hydrocarbon emissions from the engine.
EGR
The EGR system recycles measured quantities of exhaust gas back through the engine where they mix with the incoming air charge.
The powertrain control module (PCM) controls the vacuum regulator valve with ground pulses. This regulates the amount and duration of the vacuum signal supplied to the exhaust gas recirculation valve therefore the valve lift and opening times are controlled.
EGR Cooler
The EGR system includes an EGR cooler which is fitted into the engine cooling system. The EGR cooler cools the recirculated exhaust gas therefore lowering the combustion temperature and reducing the formation of NOx (oxides of nitrogen).
