Diagnosis and Testing

Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern by operating the system.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

Visual Inspection Chart

Mechanical
  • Air cleaner Intake pipe
  • Air cleaner
  • Air cleaner element
  • Air cleaner outlet pipe
  1. If an obvious cause for observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.
  1. If the concern is not visually evident, verify the symptom and refer to the symptom chart.

Excessive induction noise

CHECK the intake air distribution and filtering system for security and leaks. INSTALL new components as necessary. TEST the system for normal operation.
Oil in the air cleaner

Positive crankcase ventilation (PCV).
*
Vehicles with 1.8L/2.0L/1.6L Zetec-E engine. REFER to Section  303-08A Engine Emission Control / 303-08D Engine Emission Control.
*
Vehicles with 1.8L Diesel engine. REFER to Section  303-08A Engine Emission Control / 303-08D Engine Emission Control.
Water in the air cleaner
*
Detached air cleaner intake pipe.
*
Blocked air cleaner drain.
*
CHECK the air cleaner intake pipe for security. Clean the air cleaner. Test the system for normal operation.
