Disassembly and Assembly

Disassembly

All vehicles

  1. Remove the head restraint guide tubes.
    • Using a suitable screwdriver, release the locking tangs.

  1. Remove the backrest rear panel retaining screw covers.

  1. Remove the backrest rear panel.
    1. Remove the retaining screws.
    1. Remove the panel.

  1. Detach the backrest cover from the backrest.
    • Detach the retaining strips.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:To avoid damage to the backrest lumbar support adjuster, even pressure must be applied to the opposite sides of the wheel.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Vehicles equipped with an armrest have an extension to the backrest lumbar support adjuster.
    Remove the backrest lumbar support adjuster (if equipped).

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not remove the circlip.
    Remove the armrest (if equipped).
    1. Push the backrest cover inwards to gain access to the circlip.
    1. Release the circlip.
    1. Remove the armrest.

  1. Detach the backrest release lever cables from the base of the backrest.
    1. Detach the outer cables from the backrest frame.
    1. Detach the inner cables from the release catches.

  1. Detach the backrest release lever inner cable from the release lever.
    1. Lift the backrest release lever.
    1. Detach the cable.

  1. Detach the backrest release lever housing from the backrest.
    1. Using a suitable screwdriver, depress the locking tang.
    1. Detach the housing.

  1. Remove the backrest release lever housing.
    • Detach the release lever outer cable from the housing.

  1. Remove the backrest release lever trim panel.
  1. Roll the backrest cover up the backrest to access the lower ends of the tensioning rods.

  1. Detach the lower ends of the tensioning rods from the backrest.
  1. Roll the backrest cover up the backrest to access the upper ends of the tensioning rods.

  1. Detach the upper ends of the tensioning rods from the backrest.
  1. Roll the backrest cover up the backrest to access the upper end of the spring frame.

  1. Detach the backrest cover from the spring frame.
    • Cut the hog rings.
Vehicles with side air bags

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Do not re-use the plastic retaining rivet. Always use the new rivet from the service kit. Failure to follow this warning could impair the air bag deployment and may result in personal injury.
    Remove the side air bag module deployment sleeve retainer.
    • Remove and discard the plastic retaining rivet.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Do not attempt to separate the plastic retaining strips in any other way than that detailed. Failure to follow this warning could impair the air bag deployment and may result in personal injury.
    Slide apart the plastic retaining strips securing the side air bag deployment sleeve.
All vehicles

  1. Remove the backrest cover.
    1. Detach the retaining strip.
    1. Remove the backrest cover.
  1. Remove the tensioning rods from the backrest cover if a new backrest cover is to be installed.

  1. Remove the backrest pad.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Note the position of the anti-squeak mat on the backrest frame to aid installation.
    Remove the anti-squeak mat (if equipped).
Vehicles with side air bags
  1. Remove the side air bag module. For additional information, refer to Section  501-20A Safety Belt System / 501-20B Supplemental Restraint System.

Assembly

Vehicles with side air bags
  1. Install the side air bag module. For additional information, refer to Section  501-20A Safety Belt System / 501-20B Supplemental Restraint System.
All vehicles

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Make sure the anti-squeak mat is correctly placed onto the seat frame. Do not cover the side air bag module. Failure to follow this warning could impair air bag deployment and may result in personal injury.
    Install the anti-squeak mat (if equipped).

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Make sure the backrest pad is correctly placed around the side air bag module. Failure to follow this warning could impair air bag deployment and may result in personal injury.
    Install the backrest pad.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:If a new backrest pad is being installed, the pad must be cut to allow installation of the release lever mechanism.
    Using the release lever trim panel as a template, cut the backrest pad to fit around the top inner edge of the trim panel.
  1. If installing a new backrest cover, install the tensioning rods into the backrest cover.

  1. Attach the backrest cover to the underside of the top of the seat frame.
    1. Attach the backrest cover.
    1. Attach the retaining strip.
Vehicles with side air bags

  1. Slide together the plastic retaining strips to secure the side air bag deployment sleeve.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Do not re-use the plastic retaining rivet. Always use the new rivet from the service kit. Failure to follow this warning could impair the air bag deployment and may result in personal injury.
    Install the side air bag module deployment sleeve retainer.
All vehicles

  1. Use hog ring pliers to close the hog rings. Do not use any other tool. The hog rings must be closed to overlap as illustrated.

  1. Attach the backrest cover to the spring frame.
    • Install the hog rings.
  1. Roll the backrest cover down the backrest to the upper end of the spring frame.

  1. Attach the upper ends of the tensioning rods to the backrest.
  1. Roll the backrest cover down the backrest to the lower end of the spring frame.

  1. Attach the lower ends of the tensioning rods to the backrest.
  1. Roll the backrest cover down the backrest.

  1. Install the backrest release lever trim panel.

  1. Attach the release lever outer cables to the release lever housing.

  1. Install the backrest release lever housing.

  1. Attach the backrest release lever inner cable to the release lever.

  1. Attach the backrest release lever cables to the base of the backrest.
    1. Attach the inner cables to the release catches.
    1. Attach the outer cables to the backrest frame.

  1. Install the armrest (if equipped).

  1. Install the backrest lumbar support adjuster (if equipped).

  1. Install the backrest cover.
    • Attach the retaining strips.

  1. Install the backrest rear panel.
    1. Install the panel.
    1. Install the retaining screws.

  1. Install the backrest rear panel retaining screw covers.

  1. Install the head restraint guides.
