The passenger compartment doors are of a conventional latch to striker plate design with the striker located on the B and C pillars with a built-in door ajar switch.

The hood and liftgate striker plates locate into latches positioned in the vehicle body.

The hood can only be opened by using the ignition key in the hood lock cylinder. To open the hood:

  1. Turn the key fully to the left, this releases the hood onto the safety catch.
  1. Turn the key fully to the right, this allows the hood to open.
  1. NOTE:
NOTE:The ignition key must be removed after opening the hood to avoid accidentally breaking the key by knocking against it while working in the engine compartment.
Turn the key back to the central position and remove the key.

The liftgate can be opened by a release switch located in the instrument panel. It can also be opened with the ignition key in the lock cylinder situated in the liftgate or by pressing the liftgate release button twice on the remote transmitter.

The door latch mechanisms are operated by a conventional actuating rod and cable system connected to the inner and outer latch handles.

The power lock system consists of the components used in the manual door lock system with the following additional power door lock switches, power door lock actuator, circuit wiring and circuit protection.

The door handle and latch are removed from the inside of the door panel. The handle and latch cannot be removed separately. The actuating rods and latches are covered inside the door by a security shield.

The remote transmitter operates the following functions:

  • Unlocking and locking the driver door.
  • Unlocking and locking all doors.
  • Unlocking and locking the liftgate.
  • Activate and deactivate the double locking and the interior scanning system (if equipped).
  • Arms and disarms the anti-theft alarm system.
  • Deactivates a triggered alarm.

Inputs and Outputs

The keyless entry lock system receives inputs from the following:

  • Ignition switch (positions I and II).
  • Door ajar switches.
  • Hood switch.
  • Liftgate switch.
  • Remote transmitter.
  • Anti-theft liftgate alarm inhibit switch.

The keyless entry lock system distributes outputs to the following:

  • Central timer module (CTM) (vehicles built up to 08/2001).
  • GEM (vehicles built 08/2001 onwards).
  • Door lock actuators.
  • Double locking motors.
  • Indicator LED.
  • Direction indicators.
  • Alarm horn.

Remote transmitter

The keyless entry lock system is completely independent in function but fully integrated within the anti-theft alarm and double locking module (vehicles built up to 01/2001) or within the GEM (vehicles built 01/2001 onwards). The remote control system consists of a remote transmitter and an antenna (radio frequency system).

The remote transmitter for the radio frequency system will operate without the remote transmitter being directed at the vehicle. The normal range between the remote transmitter and the antenna will be 10 meters.

Before the remote control system can be used, each remote transmitter must be programmed to the vehicle. A maximum number of four remote transmitters can be programmed to any vehicle. All remote transmitters must be programmed at the same time.
For additional information, refer to: Remote Transmitter Programming - Vehicles With: Radio Frequency Keyless Entry (501-14 Handles, Locks, Latches and Entry Systems, General Procedures).

The keyless entry locks will not operate with the ignition switch in the RUN position.

Locking and Unlocking

The remote transmitter is housed within the ignition key and contains three buttons to operate the system.

Press the LOCK button once to activate the central locking system and the alarm system.

Press the LOCK button twice within two seconds to activate the central locking system, double locking system, alarm system and the interior scanning system (if equipped).

Press the UNLOCK button once the double locking is reset, the alarm system is deactivated and only the drivers door is unlocked.

Press the UNLOCK button twice within three seconds, will unlock the remaining doors.

For vehicles built 01/2001 onwards, the mode for unlocking can be changed from one press opening just the driver door to opening all the doors. PRESS the LOCK and UNLOCK buttons simultaneously for 4 seconds. PRESS the buttons again for 4 seconds will change the status back. As each mode-change is recognized by the module, the direction indicators will flash twice.

Press the LIFTGATE RELEASE button twice within three seconds to release the liftgate.

Double Locking

Double locking prevents the interior door handles from unlocking the vehicle.

For vehicles built up to 10/2003, double locking is activated by turning the key, using either the driver or the passenger door cylinder, to the unlock position and then to the lock position within three seconds. For vehicles built 10/2003 onwards, double locking is activated by turning the key in the driver door cylinder only, to the unlock position and then to the lock position within three seconds.

Double locking can also be activated by using the remote transmitter.

Successful double locking is indicated by the direction indicators and the indicator LED flashing twice.

Double locking will be inhibited if the control module senses a door is open. The anti-theft alarm and double locking module receives this input from the CTM (vehicles built up to 08/2001) or the GEM (vehicles built 08/2001 onwards), which receives its input from the door ajar switch.

If the vehicle battery becomes discharged after the double locking has been activated, by opening the door with the key this will mechanically deactivate the double locking (only on the door opened).

Anti-Theft Alarm and Double Locking Module (vehicles built up to 08/2001)

For additional information, refer to: Anti-Theft Alarm and Double Locking Module (419-10 Multifunction Electronic Modules, Removal and Installation).

The anti-theft alarm and double locking module is equipped with a battery back-up which holds the programmed transmitter(s) memory in the event of the vehicle battery disconnection.

GEM (vehicles built 08/2001 onwards)

For additional information, refer to: Generic Electronic Module (GEM) (419-10 Multifunction Electronic Modules, Removal and Installation).
