Removal and Installation

Transmission jack

Removal

Vehicles with rear disc brakes
  1. Remove the brake disc shield.
    For additional information, refer to: Brake Disc Shield (206-04 Rear Disc Brake, Removal and Installation).
Vehicles with rear drum brakes
  1. Remove the wheel hub.
    For additional information, refer to: Wheel Hub - Vehicles With: Rear Drum Brakes (204-02 Rear Suspension, Removal and Installation).

  1. Detach the parking brake cable guide from the wheel knuckle.

  1. Disconnect the parking brake cable.
  1. Pull the parking brake cable and parking brake cable guide through the wheel knuckle.
All vehicles

  1. Detach the rear brake hose from the wheel knuckle.

  1. Detach the parking brake cable from the wheel knuckle.

  1. Detach the wheel speed sensor wiring harness from the wheel knuckle.
  1. Remove the spring. For additional information, refer to: Spring - Wagon (204-02 Rear Suspension, Removal and Installation).

  1. Fabricate a 20 mm wide by 184 mm long spacer.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The suspension must be set to the design height setting.
    Using a transmission jack and a wooden block, raise the suspension to the design height setting.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The spacer must be positioned exactly as shown.
    Install the spacer.
    • Install the spacer between the rear lower arm and the rear axle crossmember making sure that the spacer is in the vertical plane.

  1. Detach the front lower arm from the wheel knuckle.

  1. Detach the upper arm from the wheel knuckle.

  1. Mark the position of the rear lower arm adjustment cam to the rear axle crossmember.

  1. Remove the rear lower arm.

  1. Remove the air deflector.

  1. Remove the wheel knuckle.

Installation

All vehicles
  1. Using a transmission jack, support the wheel knuckle.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not fully tighten the wheel knuckle retaining bolts at this stage.
    Install the wheel knuckle.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not fully tighten the upper arm to wheel knuckle retaining bolt at this stage.
    Attach the upper arm to the wheel knuckle.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not fully tighten the front lower arm to wheel knuckle retaining bolt at this stage.
    Attach the front lower arm to the wheel knuckle.
  1. Lower and remove the transmission jack.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not fully tighten the rear lower arm retaining bolt and the rear lower arm adjustment cam nut at this stage.
    Attach the rear lower arm to the wheel knuckle and the rear axle crossmember.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The suspension must be set to the design height setting.
    Using a transmission jack and a wooden block, raise the suspension to the design height setting.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:The spacer must be positioned exactly as shown.
    Install the spacer.
    • Install the spacer between the rear lower arm and the rear axle crossmember making sure that the spacer is in the vertical plane.

  1. Tighten the wheel knuckle retaining bolts.

  1. Tighten the upper arm to wheel knuckle retaining bolt.

  1. Tighten the front lower arm to wheel knuckle retaining bolt.

  1. Tighten the rear lower arm to wheel knuckle retaining bolt.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not fully tighten the rear lower arm adjustment cam nut at this stage.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Align the mark on the rear lower arm adjustment cam to the mark on the rear axle crossmember.
    Install the rear lower arm.

  1. Lower the suspension from the design height setting.
    • Remove the spacer.

  1. Install the air deflector.
  1. Install the spring. For additional information, refer to: Spring - Wagon (204-02 Rear Suspension, Removal and Installation).

  1. Attach the wheel speed sensor wiring harness to the wheel knuckle.

  1. Attach the parking brake cable to the wheel knuckle.

  1. Attach the rear brake hose to the wheel knuckle.
Vehicles with rear drum brakes
  1. Push the parking brake cable and parking brake cable guide through the wheel knuckle.

  1. Connect the parking brake cable.

  1. Attach the parking brake cable guide to the wheel knuckle.
  1. Install the wheel hub.

Vehicles with rear disc brakes
  1. Install the brake disc shield.
    For additional information, refer to: Brake Disc Shield (206-04 Rear Disc Brake, Removal and Installation).
All vehicles
  1. Check the toe setting and adjust as necessary. For additional information, refer to: (204-00 Suspension System - General Information)

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Final tightening of the rear lower arm adjustment cam nut must be carried out when the vehicle weight is on the road wheels.
    Tighten the rear lower arm adjustment cam nut.
