General Procedures

Draining

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:When releasing the cooling system pressure, cover the coolant expansion tank cap with a thick cloth to prevent the possibility of scalding. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:The cooling system pressure will be vented to the underside of the coolant expansion tank.
    Release the cooling system pressure by slowly turning the coolant expansion tank cap between 2 and 3 turns.
  1. Remove the coolant expansion tank cap.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:To avoid the removal of an excessive volume of coolant, the cooling system should only be drained from the radiator drain plug.
    Drain the cooling system.
    • Allow the coolant to drain into a suitable container.
  1. Install the radiator drain plug.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

Filling and Bleeding

CAUTION:
CAUTION:Make sure the coolant level does not fall below the MIN mark during the filling and bleeding procedure. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the cooling system.
NOTE:
NOTE:Make sure the interior heater temperature control switch is in the hot position.
  1. Switch the interior heater blower off.
NOTE:
NOTE:If the cooling system has been drained from any coolant system hose(s) other than the radiator drain plug. Fill the coolant expansion tank to the top of the coolant expansion tank filler neck.
  1. Fill the coolant expansion tank to level with the bottom of the coolant expansion tank filler neck.
  1. Start the engine, maintain the engine speed at 2500 revolutions per minute (RPM) for two minutes.
  1. Fill the coolant expansion tank up to the MAX mark, install the coolant expansion tank cap.
  1. Maintain the engine speed at 2500 RPM for fourteen minutes until the thermostat opens and the engine has reached normal operating temperature.
  1. Increase the engine speed to 4000 RPM for approximately ten seconds.
  1. Decrease the engine speed to 3000 RPM for ten minutes.
  1. Switch the engine off.
  1. Check the cooling system for leaks.
  1. Allow the engine to cool.
  1. Fill the coolant expansion tank to the MAX mark and replace coolant expansion tank cap.
