  1. Install the lower radiator splash guard.

  1. Install the engine undershield.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Remove the special tools on both sides (right-hand side shown).
  1. Install the headlamp assembly on both sides.
    For additional information, refer to: Scheinwerfer (417-01 Außenbeleuchtung, Removal and Installation).
  1. Install the air cleaner.
    For additional information, refer to: Air Cleaner - 1.8L Duratec-HE (MI4)/2.0L Duratec-HE (MI4) (303-12A Intake Air Distribution and Filtering, Removal and Installation).
  1. Adjust the selector lever cable.

  1. Fill the transmission with automatic transmission fluid.
    For additional information, refer to: Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill (307-01B Automatic Transmission/Transaxle - Vehicles With: Automatic Transmission (CFT23), General Procedures).
  1. Remove the battery carrier.
    For additional information, refer to: Battery Tray - 1.4L Duratec-16V (Sigma)/1.6L Duratec-16V (Sigma)/1.8L Duratec-HE (MI4)/2.0L Duratec-HE (MI4) (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, Removal and Installation).
  1. Initialize the window winder motors.
    For additional information, refer to: Door Window Motor Initialization (501-11 Glass, Frames and Mechanisms, General Procedures).

Installation Details

Item 1 : Transmission

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The torque converter must remain at the correct installation depth throughout the whole installation procedure.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure that the two locating dowels are installed.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Before installing the bolts in the transmission, the torque converter studs must be aligned with the holes in the drive plate.
    Install the torque converter.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The torque converter hub must engage fully in the oil pump drive gear.
    Check the installation depth of the torque converter.
    1. Position the steel straightedge on the transmission flange.
    1. Measure the correct installation depth between the automatic transmission flange and the torque converter guide collar.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The torque converter must remain at the correct installation depth throughout the whole installation procedure.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Secure the transmission with securing straps.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Support the transmission with suitable wooden blocks.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure that the dowel pins are correctly installed in the engine flange.
    Move the transmission into position using the transmission jack and install it.

Item 2 : Transmission right-hand bolt.

  1. Install the transmission right-hand bolt.
  1. Remove the retaining straps.
  1. Remove the transmission jack.

Item 3 : Transmission lower bolts

  1. Install the transmission lower bolts.

Item 4 : Transmission upper bolts

  1. Install the transmission upper bolts.
    • Install the ground cable on the transmission.

Item 6 : Torque converter nuts

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure that the torque converter nuts do not fall into the torque converter housing.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Renew the torque converter nuts.
    Install the torque converter nuts.
    • Turn the engine to gain access to the fastening points of the three torque converter nuts.

Item 7 : Starter motor

  1. Install the starter motor.
    For additional information, refer to: Starter Motor - 1.8L Duratec-HE (MI4)/2.0L Duratec-HE (MI4) (303-06A Starting System, Removal and Installation).

Item 8 : Rear engine mounting bracket

  1. Raise the engine / transmission assembly slightly using the special tools.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Install the rear engine mounting bracket (rear engine mounting shown removed for clarity).

Item 9 : Rear engine mounting

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Install a new bolt on the rear engine mounting.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not tighten the bolt of the rear engine mounting for the moment.
    Install the bolt of the rear engine mounting.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to:

  1. Remove the special tools.

Item 10 : Halfshaft LH

  1. Install the left-hand halfshaft.
    For additional information, refer to: Front Halfshaft LH (205-04 Front Drive Halfshafts, Removal and Installation).

Item 11 : Halfshaft RH

  1. Install the right-hand halfshaft.
    For additional information, refer to: Antriebswelle vorn rechts (205-04 Vorderradantriebswellen, Removal and Installation).

Item 12 : Engine roll restrictor

  1. Install the engine roll restrictor.

  1. Install the crashbox.
    1. Install the M10 x 16 bolt.
    1. Install the M10 x 25 bolts.

Item 13 : Exhaust pipe

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Install a new flexible exhaust pipe gasket and nuts.
    Attach the flexible exhaust pipe to the catalytic converter.
    • Coat the catalytic converter stud with grease before installing.

  1. Attach the flexible exhaust pipe to the crossmember exhaust bracket.

  1. Detach the support sleeve or the reinforcement from the flexible exhaust pipe.

  1. Install the cross brace.

Item 14 : Radiator mounting

  1. Fasten the radiator support bracket on both sides (right-hand side shown).
    • Push the radiator back into the installation position.
    • Screw in the rear radiator support bracket bolt.
    • Tighten the radiator support bracket bolts.

  1. Fasten the radiator support bracket on both sides (left-hand side shown).
    • Screw in the rear radiator support bracket bolt.
    • Tighten the radiator support bracket bolts.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The automatic transmission contains components and assemblies which are sensitive to electrostatic charging.
    Attach the automatic transmission central connector.
    • Attach the central connector and lock by turning clockwise.

  1. Attach the transmission fluid cooler feed and return lines to the automatic transmission.

  1. Clip in the transmission fluid cooler feed and return lines at the fluid line bracket.

Item 15 : Transmission ground cable

  1. Install the ground cable on the transmission.

  1. Tighten the bolt of the rear engine mounting.

Item 16 : Selector lever cable

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not kink the selector lever cable.
    Attach the selector lever cable to the transmission.
    1. Press the locking pins together and attach the selector lever cable to the abutment, press down the locking tab.
    1. Attach the selector lever cable to the selector mechanism.
