Removal

WARNING:
WARNING:Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may ignite. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section  414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.

  1. Remove the air intake tube.

  1. Detach the accelerator cable from the throttle body and position it to one side.
    1. Detach the accelerator outer cable from the throttle body bracket.
    1. Detach the accelerator inner cable from the throttle body lever.
  1. Remove the timing belt.
    For additional information, refer to Timing Belt in this section.

  1. Using the special tool, remove the camshaft pulleys.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Loosen the camshaft bearing cap retaining bolts in the sequence shown.
    Remove the camshafts.
    • Remove the camshaft bearing caps retaining bolts evenly in several stages two turns at a time.
    • Remove and discard the camshaft oil seals.

Installation

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Only turn the engine in the normal direction of rotation.
    Turn the crankshaft to approximately 60 degrees before top dead center (BTDC) on cylinder number 1.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Identification numbers are provided on the outer face of the camshaft bearing caps.
    Apply sealant to the camshaft bearing cap numbers 0 and 5 in the areas shown.
  1. Coat the camshaft and camshaft bearing caps with clean engine oil .
  1. Install the camshaft so that none of the cams are at full lift.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Install the camshaft bearing cap retaining bolts evenly, in the sequence shown, one half turn at a time.
    Install the camshafts.
    • Tighten the camshaft bearing cap retaining bolts in the sequence shown in two stages.
    • Stage 1: 10 Nm
    • Stage 2: 19 Nm
  1. Coat the camshaft and oil seal lip with clean engine oil .

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Install new camshaft oil seals.
    Install the camshaft oil seals.
    • Using the special tool, a washer and a M10 x 70 mm bolt, install the oil seal.
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not tighten the camshaft timing pulley retaining bolts at this stage. The camshaft timing pulleys must be able to turn freely on the camshafts.
    Install the camshaft timing pulleys.
  1. Install the timing belt.
    For additional information, refer to Timing Belt in this section.
  1. Check the valve clearance and if necessary adjust.
    For additional information, refer to Valve Clearance Adjustment in this section.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Attach the accelerator cable to the throttle body.
    1. Attach the accelerator outer cable to the throttle body bracket.
    1. Attach the accelerator inner cable to the throttle body lever.

  1. Install the air intake tube.
  1. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section  414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.
