Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS)

Diagnosing electronically controlled automatic transaxles is simplified by using WDS.

One of the most important things to remember is that there is a definite procedure. Do not take short cuts or assume that critical checks or adjustments have already been made. Follow the procedures as given to avoid missing critical components or steps.

On-Board Diagnostics with Diagnostic Tool

NOTE:
NOTE:When the faults are stored, the Automatic transmission module differentiates between continuous and sporadic faults. If a fault only occurs once within several driving cycles, it is stored as a sporadic fault. If the fault is not detected again over a distance of approximately 1000 km (625 miles), it is cleared from the memory. If the fault is present again within the driving cycles, it is stored in the Automatic transmission module as a continuous fault and can be read out through the data link connector (DLC) using WDS.
NOTE:
NOTE:After certain repairs to the transmission and engine, it is necessary to clear the learned (adaptive) values from the automatic transmission module and reconfigure the basic values with WDS, e.g. after changing the valve body assembly or the powertrain control module (PCM).

The Quick Tests are in the Vehicle System Test Manual. These tests can be used to diagnose the PCM, sensors, and actuators of the 4-speed automatic transaxle.

The following is a guide for using the on-board diagnostic (OBD) Quick Tests.

  • Quick Test 1.0 - Visual Inspection
  • Quick Test 2.0 - Set Up
  • Quick Test 3.0 - Key On, Engine Off (KOEO)
  • Quick Test 4.0 - Continuous Memory
  • Quick Test 5.0 - Key On, Engine Running (KOER)
  • Special Test Mode
  • Wiggle Test Mode - Output Test Mode
  • PCM Reset Mode
  • Clearing Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs)
  • OBD II Drive Cycle
  • Other Scan Tool Features
  • Interrogate the Diagnostic Trouble Codes both in a KOER test and in a KOEO test. Note the DTCs.

On-Board Diagnosis with Diagnostic Tool

NOTE:
NOTE:All engine checks must be completed and any faults rectified before any transmission checks may be carried out.

When using the roller test stand, make sure that the vehicle is secured.

Preparation

WARNING:
WARNING:Do not carry out the test on a lift as the vehicle may move out of position as result of sudden gearshifts.

Download the required software according to the manufacturer's instruction.

Shift the selector lever into position "P" and apply the parking brake.

To carry out the diagnosis, follow the user guide instructions on the WDS display.

Perform On-Board Diagnosis

A passenger is necessary because the screen data must be read from WDS during the journey.

During diagnostics with WDS, the electrical connection between the transmission and the PCM is disconnected. All gear changes are then controlled by WDS.

Continue the diagnostic procedure until its completion, then carry out any rectification work and re-verify the condition (by a road test if necessary).

Checking the temperature of the automatic transmission fluid

  • Connect WDS to the data link connector (DLC).
  • Select the indicator group no. 5 on WDS.
  • The WDS display indicates the automatic transmission fluid temperature.
