Diagnosis and Testing

Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS)
WARNING:
WARNING:Apply the parking brake and move the selector lever to the "P" PARK position when:
  • the vehicle is parked;
  • any checks or adjustments are carried out in the engine compartment;
  • the vehicle is left with the engine running.

Know and understand the concern

The customer concern must be clearly understood before diagnosing the cause of the concern. Therefore it is important to check the details with the customer. The conditions under which the concern arises must be understood. For example:

  • is the engine cold or at operating temperature
  • is the ambient temperature hot or cold
  • what are the vehicle operating conditions

1. Verify the customer concern.

2. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

Visual Inspection Chart

Mechanical Electrical
  • Damaged shift mechanism
  • Transaxle fluid leak
  • Damaged transaxle casing
  • Fuse(s)
  • Electrical connector(s)
  • Ground connection(s)
  • Battery connections

3. If an obvious cause for an observed or reported concern is found, correct the cause (if possible) before proceeding to the next step.

4. If the cause is not visually evident, verify that symptom and refer to WDS.

Verification of condition

NOTE:
NOTE:If noise or vibration is a concern, check for dependency on: rpm, vehicle speed, shift, gear range or temperature.
NOTE:
NOTE:Some automatic transmission concerns may give rise to concern over the way the engine runs. For example, it can cause the engine to stall if the torque converter lock-up clutch does not disengage.

Verify the conditions under which the concern arises:

  • Engine cold or at operating temperature
  • Hot or cold ambient temperature
  • Type of road
  • Vehicle loaded or unloaded
  • City or highway driving
  • Upshift
  • Downshift
  • Coasting
  • Shift quality
  • Noise or vibration
  • Sequential shifting

Fluid Condition Check

The condition and color of the transmission fluid can provide important information when fault-finding.

  • Remove approximately 1/4 liter of fluid from the transmission.
REFER to: Fluid Level Check (307-01A Automatic Transmission/Transaxle - Vehicles With: AG4, In-vehicle Repair).
  • Pour it into a glass container and hold it up against the light. The transmission fluid should have a yellow color and should not smell burnt.
  • Let the transmission fluid stand for approximately 30 minutes and then check for formation and sediment. Metal and fine particles of severe contamination will be easily identifiable.
  • If the condition of the transmission fluid is OK, top up the transmission fluid.
REFER to: Transmission Fluid Drain and Refill (307-01A Automatic Transmission/Transaxle - Vehicles With: AG4, In-vehicle Repair).

If the transmission fluid is discolored, the clutches and brake bands must be checked and if necessary changed. If the fluid is severely contaminated, install new oil cooler tubes. If the check reveals the presence of metallic particles in the transmission fluid, the transmission must also be disassembled.
REFER to: Transaxle (307-01A Automatic Transmission/Transaxle - Vehicles With: AG4, Disassembly).
All the components must be cleaned and any worn components must be changed.
